Board of Directors
Owen Hunt has been passionate about bringing people together through sport since he was 18. Organizing adult recreational basketball leagues, running track camps, and coaching track and cross country at Harlem High School.
In 2025, Owen created Northern Illinois Lightning Athletics, turning that passion into a club built around community and athletic development. Then this spring he decided to transition it to a nonprofit called Northern Illinois Lightning TFCC. He now serves as President of the board and Executive Director.
Owen is completing his Associate of Arts at Rock Valley College this spring and will go on to pursue a Bachelor's in Philosophy at the University of Illinois Springfield. He lives in Loves Park, Illinois.
Gavin Smith (on the right) is currently pursuing a degree in Fire Science at Rock Valley College, working toward his goal of becoming a firefighter. A calling rooted in a desire to serve and protect those around him.
When he's not studying or cheering on the Green Bay Packers, Gavin stays active and brings that same energy and dedication to his role on the board. He works at Aero Bar and Grill and is a familiar, friendly face in the community.
Benis Crnovrsanin graduated at the top of his class from Harlem High School in 2023 and went on to enroll at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he is pursuing a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering. In high school, Benis competed in tennis and was deeply involved in extracurriculars including the National Honor Society as Treasurer, Math Team, and Varsity Science Olympiad. That drive to be involved and push things forward has never left him, he is currently a member of the Student Aircraft Builders Club at U of I.
Benis brings a sharp mind and a genuine passion for elevating everything he is a part of, making him a tremendous asset to the Northern Illinois Lightning TFCC board.
When he's not buried in coursework, Benis enjoys backpacking, exploring new places, and spending time with friends.
Ella Shaw graduated from Harlem High School in 2023 and is currently attending Rock Valley College pursuing her Associate's in Media Production. She has always been drawn to being part of something bigger, whether that was running on her high school cross country team or volunteering at community events like the Footsteps for Families 5K.
Ella brings that same spirit of involvement to her role on the board of Northern Illinois Lightning TFCC. When she's not in class, you can find her going on runs with friends, sewing, binge-watching her favorite shows, or striking up a conversation with just about anyone.
You might even spot her at practices or meets capturing photos and videos for the club, if you do, make sure to say hi!
Tony Garza graduated from Harlem High School in 2023, where he competed in shot put and discus and discovered something that stuck with him. The unique way track and field brings together all kinds of people under one sport. That sense of community has stayed with him ever since.
After graduating, Tony attended Rock Valley College and earned his Associate's in Media Production. He has since enrolled at DePaul University, where he is pursuing a Bachelor's in Journalism.
Outside of school, Tony enjoys shooting photography, playing pickup basketball, cheering on the Chicago Bulls, and gaming with friends. He is proud to bring his love of community and storytelling to his role on the board of Northern Illinois Lightning TFCC.
